Hello!

Sometimes it can seem overwhelming when we think about trying to prepare children for kindergarten. There are so many skills, concepts, and topics to cover.

We’re here to help!

You can help your child improve his/her skills and help to prepare him/her for success in school with just a little bit of time every day

As a children’s librarian, I’ve studied early literacy and communicated with kindergarten teachers about what children should be learning in their preschool years. I’ve divided these ideas into seven categories, one for each day of the week:

Science

Language and Literacy

Reading Books

Math

Social Skills and Emotions

Fine Motor Skills

Gross Motor Skills

These activities can improve your child’s school readiness skills, ease his/her school jitters, and create really fun bonding experiences.

Don’t feel like you have to do every single activity. The fact that you are making an effort to further your child’s skills is more than a great start.

Do what you can and do what your child is ready for.

Let the learning begin!

Concepts

These seven concepts cover a broad range of ideas that children should have a basic understanding of when starting kindergarten:

  • Science – Exploring the world is vital for children’s learning foundations.

  • Language and Literacy – Language and literacy are the beginnings of learning to read, understanding rhythms of conversation, introducing vocabulary, and so much more.

  • Reading Books – Read, read, read with your child. Even if you do nothing else to prepare him/her for school.

  • Math – Counting, building, measuring. They’re all vital for learning math skills that will be used for children’s entire lives.

  • Social Skills and Emotions – Identifying, understanding, and regulating emotions is vital for health; and children need to learn basic social skills as they get older.

  • Fine Motor Skills – These are those small muscles, such as finger and hand muscles.

  • Gross Motor Skills – These are those large muscles, such as arms, legs, and cores.
