Picture Books about Sharks!

Shark vs. Train by Chris Barton

This picture book is so funny! Who will win – shark or train? They’re going head-to-head in a few competitions you may not be expecting! This is a great book for kids who may not get as into reading. Plus, it’s a great book to inspire some imaginative play after reading it! Grab your plastic shark and toy train and stage some competitions of your own!

Clark the Shark by Bruce Hale

Clark has endless energy and enthusiasm, both of which are great qualities. Unfortunately, Clark struggles to balance his energy and enthusiasm when it’s required of him. Join Clark and his teacher on the journey to learn that sometimes he needs to use his inside voice. I love this book for kids who are learning appropriate school behavior. It’s also on our list for books to read with kids who will be starting kindergarten. Plus, this is a series, so there are a few more books about Clark the Shark for you to enjoy!

Shark Lady: The True Story of Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean’s Most Fearless Scientist by Jess Keating

This is a picture book biography about Eugenie Clark. She fell in love with sharks as a child and focused her career on changing the commonplace rumors/misconceptions about sharks being scary and killing machines. Such a fun book for kids who are curious about the world.

Swimming with Sharks: The Daring Discoveries of Eugenie Clark by Heather Lang

Another picture book biography about Eugenie Clark, this book is a great introduction to Eugenie’s interesting career. I hope it inspires little kids to dream big about their future jobs and to follow their curiosities!

Chomp: A Shark Romp by Michael Paul

I love this book! It’s wonderful for introducing sharks to kids. The simple text and large illustrations call attention to the names of differnt sharks and what they look like. It’s a picture book, but it is -technically- nonfiction. Here are a few of our other favorite nonfiction books for young kids.

Dude! by Aaron Reynolds

Dude! is such a fun read-aloud. There aren’t too many words, but there is so much humor! What will happen when a shark shares the ocean with a beaver and a platypus who want to surf together? I won’t spoil the ending!

*Bonus* Nonfiction Books

Shark Week: Everything You Need to Know by Martha Brockenbrough

A non-fiction book for kids, Shark Week is so good, especially if TV’s “Shark Week” is a must-see for your kids (or you). The information is easy to digest and interesting. Plus, it’s an easy book to skim to find the most interesting parts for you! Here are a few of our other favorite nonfiction books for young kids.

The Ultimate Book of Sharks from National Geographic Kids by Brian Skerry

I mean, the photographs are my favorite part of this really cool book made by National Geographic Kids. If you want to see some amazing shark photos and learn some shark facts, this is a book for you. It’s a non-fiction book, so there may be more text than some kids are interested in, but that doesn’t mean you should cross it off your list! Check out our tips for reading non-fiction books with young kids!

Welcome! I'm Jaime, and I'm so happy you're here to learn, play, and read with me!

I'm a children's librarian in the midwest. I have a Master's in Library Science, with a Youth Services specialization. I like to think of myself as a professional reader of children's books, a sensory enthusiast, and a play activist. Which is great for working with children because kids' days are full of learning and playing (and in my dream world, reading books)!

I hope you're able to find some inspiration for teaching the littles in your life!
