Amazing Books About Friendship for Kids of All Ages

Toddler

There is a Bird on Your Head (An Elephant and Piggie Book) by Mo Willems

This is a book from a pretty well-known series, but – honestly – every one of the Elephant and Piggie books is great for friendship concepts, as Elephant and Piggie are friends figuring out friendship.

Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle

A really sweet book about farm animals and friendship. It’s simple and entertaining with a great message – perfect for toddlers!

Preschool

Strictly No Elephants by Lisa Mantchev

This sweet book is about unique pets and unique friends. Including people who are different from you is a key for friendship. Little ones will love this sweet book, and the illustrations are adorable. Who doesn’t want a little pet elephant??

The Friend Ship by Kat Yeh

Lonely animals join together on Hedgehog’s quest to find something called a friend ship but eventually realize that it’s right there in front of them.

Elementary

Hector the Collector by Emily Beeny

With a focus on collections, this book is about bullying and the importance of seeing people’s value – even when they seem different than us.

Together Always by Edwina Wyatt

A sweet book about friendship, Together Always is great for young friends who are learning that it’s okay to be apart, as friendships can outlast distance and different preferences.

The Story of Diva and Flea by Mo Willems

I feel like this Mo Willems’ book is not as well-known as a few of his other books, but it’s amazing. Two unlikely friends, a stray cat and a pet dog, open new worlds to each other. It’s a beginning chapter book with illustrations. Perfect for elementary students who are transitioning to chapter books.

Middle School

The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty

After getting struck by lightning, Lucy’s life changed. She is now incredible at math. She, however, is not incredible at middle school. Facing bullies, making friends, and fitting in, Lucy is relatable to middle school students everywhere.

Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson

Middle school is a tough time because many friendship transitions usually take place. As Astrid and her best friend find themselves with different interests, Astrid tries something new – roller derby.

The Iron Trial by Holly Black

This is a great Harry Potter read-alike. It’s full of magic, a school the world doesn’t doesn’t know about, and some really great friendships.

Teen/Young Adult

American Royals by Katherine McGee

What if George Washington became king after the Revolutionary War instead of the president? Well, America might have a royal family. This book is about that royal family in present day. Dive into royal family drama – and the royal friendship drama.

Dry by Neil Shusterman

An interesting book about a modern day water crisis – unlikely friendships are forged in the midst of a horrible experience.

Welcome! I'm Jaime, and I'm so happy you're here to learn, play, and read with me!

I'm a children's librarian in the midwest. I have a Master's in Library Science, with a Youth Services specialization. I like to think of myself as a professional reader of children's books, a sensory enthusiast, and a play activist. Which is great for working with children because kids' days are full of learning and playing (and in my dream world, reading books)!

I hope you're able to find some inspiration for teaching the littles in your life!
