How Toddlers and Preschoolers Can Illustrate Their Own Books

A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni is a wonderful book for practicing color recognition. Read it as inspiration for this fun process art activity!

Directions:

  1. Before beginning the craft with the kids, print chameleon outlines onto sheets of card stock. (I used the template from Academy at the Lakes.) Then, I put one chameleon on the top of each page and another on the bottom of each page, and then I cut the page in half to create two pages. Finally, I printed five chameleon images for each child.
  2. Then, I cut two holes on the left side of each half sheet.
  3. All right, now the kids can come in and start painting and illustrate their books! With watercolors and paint brushes, they can paint each chameleon one color or many colors – it’s up to them!
  4. When the finished illustrations are dry, stack them together and tie the ribbon through the holes to make a book. And you’re done!
